The 'Rhythms' series of paintings explores colour relationships and the use of a ‘disintegrating’ paint style which was inspired originally by the layers of accumulated and disintegrated paint I had seen on the walls of buildings in Cairo during my first stay there from 2000 to 2006. They were done in my studio in Brixton, London. Around this time I was also experimenting with the way in which colour and composition work together in a painting through a series of intuitive geometric 'divisions' of the picture plane.
